Follow us on Instagram!

It's 2017 and we are off to a great start!  With the advances in Smart Watch Technology, Fitbit's Increasing Popularity, and the Apple Watch Launching during 2015... What do we have to look Forward to in 2017? It looks to be the year of the Pet Wearables - or should we say "Petables"? haha...

It's not a secret that we all love our pets and we are willing to try new methods of keeping them Safe and Healthy.  Grain Free Organic Foods, Personal Dog-Walkers, Pet Hotels, Doggy Go Pro's, and Now GPS Trackers for Cats and Dogs! (Basically Pet Cell Phones)

But what Exactly are GPS Pet Trackers?  Which ones are the Best?  How do they work? How much do they cost? How will they keep my dog and cat safe?  We are going to dig deep into the topic.  We have compiled a unique list and reviewed  our choice for the Top 13 Pet Tracker for 2017.

We need to start by splitting them into 2 categories.  Radio Trackers and GSM (Cellular) GPS Trackers.

Radio Trackers utilize a somewhat dated technology and have been used for decades.   These devices don't require a monthly subscription.  Radio Trackers are commonly used by hunting dogs, and cover roughly the same distance of a Walkie Talkie's Range.  It's important to note that the more you spend the greater your range will be.  These units can range from $200-$1000+ for the top of the line units.

GPS Trackers are cutting edge technology that allows you to pinpoint your pets location in real time.  You can see a history of locations reported by the device to see every place your pet went while you were away.  Some of these GPS Trackers even give an alert when you pet leaves a pre-determined area (geo-fence).  In order to transmit the GPS location from almost anywhere and anytime use of cellular data and towers are required.  So the following would be classified as IoT and require a SIM card or cellular service of some kind.

ThePawTracker.com has teamed up with Paws in the City this Holiday season to help them raise money for their NO KILL rescue organization.  Any amount will help and below are some suggested amounts and what they will provide.  We appreciate you helping out with any amount.  Just click the link below to donate or visit www.pawsinthecity.org for more details.

100% of each dollar is used for medical care, food, shelter or training for pets in crisis.

Help us care for our adoptable pets by providing funds for their care. Below are suggested donation amounts corresponding to specific needs.

  • $15 - Microchip
  • $25 - Heartworm test
  • $60 - Puppy vaccinations
  • $95 - Spay/neuter one pet
  • $300 - Heartworm treatment
  • $750 - One month of behavioral training

The Paw Tracker is the only device that is suitable for cats as well as dogs.

The Paw Tracker and Tractive our the top 2 GPS Pet Trackers picks for 2016.  The seem to have the best customer service, and are USA based companies tend to be more responsive to issues that may arise after purchase.  We found that Whistle has some negative reviews after they merged with Tagg.  Some Tagg customers, who switched to the Whistle Application, were not able to get proper customer service.

The Paw Tracker is designed with a clip allows you to have multiple uses for this GPS tracker.  You can tracking your kids route after school by attaching it to their backpack. It is also small enough for cats.  They have a very cool story about a cat rescue on their facebook page.

For the Radio Trackers, we like the Garmin Astro 320 and the Marco Polo.  These represent the top of the line Radio Transmitter Collars.   The Radio Collars are great for certain households and great for hunting dogs. For all Urban and Suburban Real Time GPS trackers are recommended.

Whistle GPS Pet Tracker Review

Pet tracking technology is a serious commitment, not only for the economic requirements, but also for the level of safety and peace of mind afforded to you when you need it the most. Many pet owners know the panic and unknowns of a missing pet, and with such a massive majority of pets going missing each year, it’s important to select a system that really works and will keep your pets safe.

The Differences Between GPS and Cellular Tracking Technology for Pets

There are inherent performance concerns with this, as there are microchip, GPS and wireless cell technologies which are each effective for different reasons, depending on your geographical location and the availability of cell towers.

If you’re willing to spend a little bit more money up front, GPS will hands down work better for you than radio signals from microchips. However, when there is heavy interference between signals – such as with forests and mountains – it can be rendered ineffective.

On the other hand, wireless transmission will work when GPS doesn’t, depending on the availability of cell towers, and when combined, make a more desirable and reliable pet tracking system than microchips overall.

That being said, we’re also going to take comfort and durability into consideration as well as appearance in order to provide you with a clear and accurate review of the Whistle GPS Pet Tracker.

Versatile and reliable GPS Technology

Both the GPS and cell transmission technology made available with the Whistle GPS Pet Tracker offer nationwide coverage, however this doesn’t necessarily guarantee their effectiveness. As you know, GPS technology can be especially valuable if you live in a small town or rural setting with minimal transmission blockage.

By using the triangulation capabilities of satellites you’ll receive location information on your pet at all times when it’s available, with the kind of precision that will tell you exactly where they are in real time. The only limitation is transmission blockage, and because you’re granted access anywhere in the United States for free, this is a very economic and high performance option.

You’ll also be able to set up designated safe zones for your pets at your discretion. With the precision of GPS technology you can make it very specific, to the size of your back yard and even at the office. Additional safe zones can be set up in advance and by using your smartphone, you can select the one that’s appropriate for you based on your physical location, and whether or not you’re at home. If your pet leaves the designated safe zone, you can select between real time alert options which are discussed in a later section.

Optional Cell Service for Comprehensive Protection

Due to transmission blockage a cell service may be your best option, however it’s important to select the appropriate plan for your needs and your budget. Whistle does offer cell/service plans for between $6.95 and $9.95 per month, which is an option that will always be available to you.

Additionally, you can activate and cancel this service at any time, and since it’s a low cost and easy to activate, you can travel with your pets and rest assured that you can track them, even when GPS isn’t necessarily available.

You are offered nationwide access, however if you’re travelling abroad you’ll have to choose another option – otherwise we think that it’s a quite comprehensive and cost effective solution.

Benefits of Cellular Tracking Over Other Solutions

One of the enormous benefits of cellular tracking over radio signals is that rather than pointing you in the general direction of your pet, it will give you a set of coordinates to work with. While this isn’t as precise as GPS, cellular transmission has a larger usable range in that your pet tracker will maintain connection as long as there’s a cell tower nearby. You can also fall back on the GPS technology if you’d like.

If your pet leaves the expected range and loses connection while not using GPS, you’ll still be given an alert before they get too far away from home. There’s a high likelihood that your pet tracker will re-establish an expected connection, rather than simply being out of range until they return.

Another benefit that cell tracking technology has is that while GPS service does provide better performance under the right circumstances, it requires significantly more power and thus drains the battery quicker. The cellular technology does require some battery usage but is by no means a power hog, and is compatible for simultaneous use with GPS.

Smartphone and Tablet Capabilities with Active Alerts

If your pet ever goes missing you don’t want to wait hours before realizing that they’re gone, even when given precise location data with which to find them. One of the major advantages of the combined GPS and cellular technology is that when your pet leaves their safe zone, alerts will automatically be sent to your smartphone or tablet via both the Whistle mobile app and text messages.

You can choose which one works best for you, depending on whether you’re away or at home, making it easy to pass messages to friends and family members when you can’t leave to go find or check on your pets.

You’ll also be able to track your pets in real time, which is an efficient and useful feature for peace of mind, as well as locating them quickly if you have a large designated safe zone and you’d like to find them right away.

Advanced Smart Features for Additional Performance

Inevitably there are new ideas and innovations with GPS and cellular tracking technology when combined with smart functionality that can make your life easier and provide additional benefits. One of the most important areas for pet owners is their overall health and happiness, because while a pet tracker is necessary and useful in many cases, it’s nice to receive some extra value even when your pet hasn’t gotten loose.

What Whistle provides is the ability to monitor and track the activities of your pets, and provide you with that information with the free Whistle smart app. It’ll also make calculations based on the specifications of your pet, such as size, weight and age, and provide you with insights and information on how you can improve the well-being of your pet while tracking their day to day activities.

Just as importantly, the Whistle app is easy to use and compatible with both Apple and Android smartphones and tablets, so that navigating screens and accessing information very quickly is possible in tight situations.

Because of this smart technology, you’re also able to track as many pets at a time as you like, as long as they have a Whistle GPS pet tracker attached to their collar, and you have access to at least one Whistle base station.

Comfortable and Durable Construction for Pets Weighing 15+ lbs.

Outdoor pets generally like to get rough and dirty and this is not mutually exclusive to indoor pets. Thus the need for greater durability will in many ways determine a pet tracker’s overall value.

The Whistle GPS pet tracker’s collar attachment provides a secure and reliable connection to any collar or harness no greater than two inches in thickness. This is plenty of space for even large dog collars, so you likely won’t ever have to worry about whether or not it’s compatible with your pet’s accessories.

On the other hand, the tracker itself is actually compact. While durability often takes precedence, this is essential to the comfort of your pet, especially when worn for many hours throughout the day. Its actual dimensions are 3.4 x 0.7 x 1.4 inches, which provides superior comfort when compared to other options.

In terms of durability, the attachment loop is made of a strong material as is the metallic pet tracking device itself, which is vitally important because if it somehow breaks off of your pet’s collar, you could potentially lose track of them. Not to mention the economic drawbacks that a weak construction would incur, the Whistle pet tracker is also water-proof, so that you won’t have to worry about losing service if your pet decides to take a swim.

Battery and Charging Station

As with any complete wireless device, the battery is a simple yet decision breaking feature, especially for continuous use. There’s an integrated rechargeable battery that takes only one hour to charge with the included charging base station that uses a power adapter and cable. This low charge time is beneficial if you only have one base station and multiple trackers, and also provides further ease of use overall.

Final Thoughts

The Whistle GPS Pet Tracker provides high quality in all of the essential qualities of safety, comfort, performance, durability and appearance, with an elegant and compact design that provides every essential feature to a modern pet owner’s tracking needs.

Looking at the price tag of it, it certainly isn’t by any means a cheap investment, however the cellular rates are very affordable and you always have the option of purchasing additional trackers to track multiple pets simultaneously. Overall, a promising solution to an age old problem for pet lovers alike.

GPS Tracker – What to look for when buying one

If you're looking for a GPS tracker for your pet, there are a few things you should consider. Most units are bulky and not designed with either pets or their owners in mind. Make sure you know what you're getting before you buy one.

Here are some important questions to ask:

The Device

  • Is the tracker small, light and comfortable enough for your pet to happily wear all day?
  • Is the unit fully waterproof? (Can your dog go for a swim)?
  • Does it have removable batteries so that you don't have to remove the whole unit to charge it?
  • Can the unit be adjusted to fit any size collar?

The App

  • Does the tracking provide real‐time locations?
  • Does it send perimeter alerts if your pet runs away?
  • Does it offer activity monitoring?

Other Services

  • Is there a warranty if the product is lost or damaged?
  • Does the company provide strong customer support?
  • Does the design of the product cater for future expansion and accessories?
With Pod, the answer to all these questions is yes!

What is Pod?

Pod: A GPS tracker on a Mission

The team behind Pod, the world's smallest, lightest, fully waterproof GPS tracker for pets, is devoted to equipping pet owners with the best tracking available on the market so we can help them make sure their pets never go missing again. A GPS tracker is the best way to do this.

The story behind our GPS tracker

More than a year ago, Sebastian Langton lost his best friend in the world, Rango, possibly the coolest cat on the planet and his companion through many adventures. After going through the pain of losing Rango, Seb was determined to find a way to prevent other pet owners from going through the same pain. He realised a GPS tracker was the answer, but for a GPS tracker to work for animals of all sizes and dispositions, it had to be rugged and lightweight. There was no GPS tracker like this on the market.

He also learned that one in three pets go missing in their lifetime, which is more than ten million pets a year - and that it's preventable with the right GPS tracker. The idea for Pod was born -- a vision to develop the best GPS tracker for pets in the world. He and his team built a prototype, kicked off a crowdfunding campaign that raised more than $150,000 and generated massive global awareness. He rest is history as Pod became the must-have GPS tracker for pet lovers around the world.

As Seb says: "We created Pod so that people don't have to go through the pain of losing their pet like I did. A GPS tracker like Pod has transformed the way people think about keeping their dogs, cats and other pets safe."

Tractive GPS Pet Tracker – Top Dog Tips

Today, GPS trackers can come in handy for a lot of different things. If you’re going on a road trip, chances are you’ve got a GPS device in your car to help you get where you’re going. Have you ever thought about attaching one of these units to your dog? This Tractive GPS Pet Tracker make it easy to know exactly where your dog is at all times.

I used to think GPS for dogs would only be beneficial for hunting canines or dogs that aren’t trained to stay in the yard. We train our dogs not to leave our property and we keep a close eye on them while they’re playing outside. I didn’t think a GPS tracker would be beneficial for our family at all, but this GPS tracker from Tractive changed my mind.

I never realized how much I worried about our dogs in the past. It was always in the back of my mind when they were outside. I would check on them every few minutes, but when you’re in the middle of doing something that can be a pain. I guess I’ve gotten used to being interrupted every 5 minutes to check on dogs for so long that I don’t even realize it anymore.

Enter Tractive. I was sent their product in exchange for my honest Tractive GPS pet tracker review. So far, I can say that it’s actuallty wonderful! The peace of mind that it provides me with is so reassuring and I can monitor our dogs right from my smartphone. I set up a Safety Zone around our home, and now I’m notified the minute they cross the boundary.

RELATED: This Is Why Your Dog Needs a GPS Tracker

Even though our well-trained dogs don’t cross that boundary often, I no longer need to stop what I’m doing every 5 minutes to make sure they haven’t wandered off. I’ll admit, I didn’t trust the device completely at first, but once you get used to it, you’ll soon find out that GPS trackers for dogs are actually quite useful tools.

Tractive GPS Pet Tracker Review

So the idea of the Tractive GPS Pet Tracker is pretty simple. You attach this small dog GPS device to your dog’s collar (you can see exactly how to do that in my video) with one of the 2 provided clips. One clip is for thinner dog collars and the other is for thicker collars (which I use on my Saddie’s collar).

After attaching the device, you download the Tractive app, which is free for Android, iPhone and Windows phones. You can also access the information via a web browser on your tablet or computer.

Tractive’s GPS app allows you to see exactly where your dog is in real time every second of the day. You can even create a customized “Safety Zone,” and you’ll be notified the instant your dog crosses the invisible boundary.

For more information about a Tractive GPS Pet Tracker and the company itself, check out my interview with Michael Hurnaus, CEO of Tractive.

Tractive GPS Pet Tracker makes it virtually impossible for my dog to get lost. I always know where he is at every moment. If he happens to wander off, I will still know exactly where he is and I’m able to retrieve him quickly.

When you purchase a Tractive GPS Pet Tracker, you get the GPS tracker for dogs, a charger, 2 clips to connect it to your pet’s collar and an instruction manual. The first thing you’ll notice when you take it out of the box is the charger. It’s a bit different than the traditional plug-in chargers that we’re used to, as it actually clips onto the device. You can see a picture of it later in this article.

Like I said, I was a skeptic before I actually got to give this dog GPS collar and app a try. I thought pet GPS trackers were only effective for working dogs or dogs that had an issue with escaping their yard. I never thought my well-trained dogs would benefit from one. I guess I was right… sort of.

It’s not my dogs that benefit from the tracker – it’s me!

I never realized how much time I spent wondering if my girls were still in the yard. I’ve gotten so used to it after raising generations of dogs that it’s just part of my daily routine now. I don’t have to worry about them anymore, though.

Tractive’s GPS app is quick to install and very user friendly. There are buttons that allow you to find your dog, turn on a light on the tracker if you’re looking for him in the dark and see where your dog has been over the last 24 hour period.

You can even monitor multiple dogs with the GPS app – you’ll just need to purchase additional trackers for each pooch.

I also liked that my Tractive GPS Pet Tracker has a built-in battery indicator that alerts you when the battery gets low. There are no worries about losing my dog because her tracker isn’t working.

RELATED: 5 Best Dog GPS Collars for Dogs

Tractive GPS Pet Tracker will work in more than 80 different countries, and there are three models to choose from. The traditional model is the white one that I use in this video review.

There is also a Special Edition, which is pink and made with Crystals from Swarowski, and a Hunter’s Edition, which has a camouflaged design is made of a more durable material.

Now, it’s that time in the review when we talk about drawbacks of Tractive GPS Pet Tracker. But truthfully, I really don’t have anything to complain about when it comes to this dog GPS tracker; it does what it’s supposed to do, and it seems to do it well.

One thing to mention – and you can see this in my video – is that the 2 clips that come with the GPS tracker are not intended to be used on thick or wide collars.

So with that in mind, you may need to buy your pet a standard dog collar if he has a unique collar, like our Chloe. She has a collar made of rope (one of those I linked to), and it’s a very thick collar. It’s no big deal to switch dog collars, especially considering the benefits you get from Tractive GPS Pet Tracker.

Another drawback of this GPS tracker for dogs is the price, but let me just start by saying that for the peace of mind that you get and the instant ability to know exactly where your dog is at any given moment, the price is completely worth it in my opinion.

The device itself is regularly $179.99, but it’s on sale right now for $129.99. So if you’re considering buying your pooch Tractive GPS Pet Tracker, now may be the time to look into it and save $50.

The improved Tractive Hunter’s Edition is on sale for $149.99 right now that’s best for hunting dogs, and you can pick up their unique design Tractive’s Special Edition as well but prices vary. I understand that this isn’t going to be an affordable device for everyone, but I do strongly recommend considering the purchase, especially if your dogs are regularly outside by themselves.

My favorite thing about this product? Its versatility! You can take your dog ANYWHERE with cell coverage, and you’ll still be able to monitor his exact location.

All you have to do is setup a new Safety Zone for the location you’re at and you’ll be notified when your Fido wanders too far away. This is a wonderful tool to bring along while traveling, camping or hiking with your dog.

Because Tractive GPS Pet Tracker runs on a cellular network, you need to pay a monthly subscription fee – just like you do with your cell phone. The fee for the Basic package is $6.99 per month, but you can save a little by signing up for a 1- or 2-year subscription.

You can also step up to the Premium package for $9.99/month, which in addition to regular perks you also get:

  • Access to all 80 countries (1 country on basic package)
  • Unlimited position history (24 hour history with basic)
  • Export position history
  • Access to the best available GSM network
  • Premium customer support
  • Ad-free apps

Summary of Tractive GPS Pet Tracker Review

Tagg GPS Pet Tracker Review

Tagg GPS Pet tracker is a pet locator, movement tracker and air temperature sensor, which offers you valuable assistance with monitoring your pet’s location and health. The locator capacities with GPS innovation and works with any telephone or PC with SMS ability, as it messages you by email or content and afterward empowers you to locate your pet on a map. Free applications are accessible for Android and iPhones, but the tracking system is not free of cost and you can’t utilize the tracking framework without paying the service charges.

Available at Amazon

Pet proprietors can define the regions where their pets are “assumed” to be, and at whatever point they leave that region, they are alarmed. However, the overall method of monitoring or tracking is static, not continuous, similar to the Garm in or Roam EO frameworks. So you should continue to request that it track to get most recent information. The neckline attachment is lightweight yet too huge for pets under 10 pounds.

TAGG utilizes a GPS tracking system. A GPS beacon is joined to the pet’s neckline. Using propelled programming innovation, available either from your PC or as an application on your net enabled smartphone. With this particular tracking system, the GPS tracking signals are transmitted through the Verizon wireless networking system.

However, if you are out of cell tower reach and you have the gadget in TRACK mode, the software keeps the history of the locations, and the aggregated data can be accessed when you enter once more into a decent good signal reception area.

What’s in the Box?

Inside the Tagg box there are a couple of more tools that are commonly found within a human movement tracker. Clearly there is the Tagg unit itself, which accompanies a clasp/mount for appending it to your pet’s neckline. There are two distinctive elastic groups for the clasp with the reasonable one being for smaller width collars and the dark one for bigger collars. In the box, you will also find the Tagg guard, that will attach on your pet’s neckline to prevent it from rubbing or snagging.

Moving far from the Tagg unit itself, you have the Tagg base which works as both a charger and the Tagg’s tool of communication. It comes with standard wall charger.

Parameters of  Tagg GPS Pet Tracker:

Design of  Tagg GPS Pet Tracker:

The Tagg GPS Pet Tracker looks like a modern electric wall collar, with a discrete white and dim body that measures 1.49 x 3.18 x 0.77 inches and weighs just 1.16 ounces. You can utilize the Tagg on felines and whatever other substantial pets you’d like to monitor. It feels sturdily worked, with a water-resistant design that can withstand extensive shower. There is a one and only large button on the front face of the Tagg, which controls power and several tracking modes, with an LED marker light underneath. The Tagg Tracker clips into onto collars utilizing the included neckline clip, and accompanies a docking station for charging and programming schedules.

How to Setup Tagg GPS Pet Tracker?

The setup of the application takes place online, and all you need to do with the Tagg is spot it on the docking station for a charge and programming upgrade. You need to enroll your Tagg Tracker’s serial number (that can be found on the bottom of the device), enter charging data, enlist your pet different parameters as its name, breed, weight, etc., set up alerts, and designate your desired tracking location of your pet. The entire procedure of setup usually takes around 15-20 minutes to complete, and you’ll have the capacity to change any settings later, if desired.

Setting up the Tagg Pet Tracker took around 10-20 minutes. To start with, connect the tracker to pets neckline, and after that connected to the base station.

Performance of  Tagg GPS Pet Tracker:

Available at Amazon

The Tagg Tracker functioned admirably on our testing. It precisely found pets on a map, and precisely tracked him as he moved around town. We got alarms at whatever point he extended outside the Tagg Zone, when the tracker was expelled from his neckline and when the battery was running low.

The Activity Tracker utilizes the tracker’s GPS to perceive how dynamic your pet is during the whole day. As per Tagg, pets ought to get somewhere around 30 – 60 minutes of exercise for each day. The Activity Tracker demonstrates to what extent your pet is resting, lightly active, highly dynamic throughout the day.

The Activity Tracker separates the information into three graphs: a daily snapshot, arrange in a circle; a course of events demonstrating while during the day your canine was dynamic and to what extent. All the three diagrams are very easy to read and understand.

Features of the App of  Tagg GPS Pet Tracker:

If you have an iPhone or Android telephone, you can download the free Tagg application. Once signed into your record, you can see a live perspective of your pet’s area as it moves around in a Google Earth view.

The Tagg iOS application offers much of the same functionality of a standard website. The application features three large buttons at the top as Locate, Start Tracking and Directions. These three buttons will offer you some assistance with finding your pet in the event that he wanders off. The center of the screen demonstrates the battery life, real-time location of your pet and his profile. At the base are tabs for the Map, Activity Tracker, Community (a connection to Tagg’s Facebook page) and Settings.

At the point when your pet goes outside their assigned zone, you’ll get an email that demonstrates a little thumbnail map of their area and connections to pages on the Tagg site that will start Tracking of your pet. When you turn on the following element, you’ll get an email with your pet’s area in every 3 minutes in each 30 minutes. Some of the received emails have a connection to the Tagg site that demonstrates a trail of where your pet has been. There is a button to play the trail, which just demonstrates to your different focuses where your pet has been.

Basic Method of Tracking of  Tagg GPS Pet Tracker:

After getting the latest updates from the server, the Tagg tracker will not only monitor the real-time location of the pet, but will also show the overall activity of the pet. During the initial step, you ought to have assigned a home zone, which can be extended to cover a solitary city piece or your whole neighborhood. You additionally pick whether you need to alert sent through content, email, or both. However, if your pet strays outside of the assigned home zone, you’ll get a warning that demonstrates your pet’s area on a map, gives you an approximate road address, and shows an option to trigger the real-time tracking mode.

Tracking mode pings the Tagg Tracker by sending you an alert of your pet’s most probable location, that can prove to be very helpful for finding a pet on the move. However, if you know that you will be leaving the home zone, basically press the only and one button on the Tagg Tracker twice to trigger or initiate trip mode. The blue LED will flicker three times, and you’ll have 15 minutes before regular tracking is re-empowered. You can restart trip mode numerous times if your trips keep going longer than 15 minutes.

All area and movement information is transmitted remotely from the Tagg Tracker, so you’ll just truly need to dock the Tagg to charge. The inherent battery is evaluated at up to 30 days of utilization, and will send you a ready indication when it is about to charge. You can also avail the free Android and iOS Tagg tracker App from the internet. With Tagg tracker app you can monitor the real-time location of your pet, but for activity tracking, you must log on the website.

Battery Life of  Tagg GPS Pet Tracker:

Tagg says the tracker’s battery can last up to 30 days; we received barely a week in return before it required a recharge.  Both the application and the site show the remaining amount of battery.

The Best Pet Trackers and GPS Dog Collars

Want some sober stats about everyday threats to your furry little companions? Dogs and cats are as prone to getting fat as us humans, especially older pets. PetMD says 17.6 percent of US dogs (13.9 million) are obese; 35.1 percent (29.9 million) are merely overweight. And according to the American Humane Association, over 10 million pets—cats and dogs—go missing every year, either lost or stolen.

Those numbers are disconcerting, especially when you consider just how much happiness our fluffy friends bring into our lives. It's our duty to keep them happy, healthy, and safe. And while regular trips to the vet along with some good old-fashioned TLC do wonders, technology can help play a pivotal role as well. We've tested plenty of pet trackers and GPS collars designed to trace your pet's activity, location, and more. Here's what to look for, along with our favorites.

Connection Type/Base Stations

All the trackers we've tested use apps for Android or iOS devices to give you a quick read on the data they collect. Few provide a web-based interface—PetPace does, but only to veterinarians who pay extra for it. FitBark and Tractive offer free web interfaces, but you still need the mobile app to use certain features. If you're not a smartphone user, you're probably not going to be a tracking customer.

Base stations are often used to establish a line of communcation between the tracker and your phone via Wi-Fi. They come in lots of shapes and sizes. The Link AKC has a base that doubles as a battery charger. FitBark sells an optional base station that looks like a plastic dog house. The Whistle 3 doesn't need a separate base station—it has Wi-Fi built in, so it uses your home router to create the base station.

The majority of pet trackers use Bluetooth for the initial setup. A few use Bluetooth exclusively. For example, the Link AKC utilizes Bluetooth to talk to your smartphone and its base station/charger—as long as it's within range of either, your pet is considered to be in a "safe zone." It isn't until your pet wanders out of range that the alerts arrive warning it might be on safari.

Activity Tracking

The very first pet trackers were all about activity, like fitness trackers—we quantified them as "Fitbits for pets," and that description still largely stands. Most of the trackers we've tested quantify activity to varying degrees.

Some have thrown themselves into the activity-tracking in a big way. PetPace, with a deep focus on dog health and working with vets, is all about generating reports on fitness, showing various movement levels from resting to high-activity, plus pulse and respiration. The Tractive Motion has graphs galore. FitBark distills every motion a dog makes into BarkPoints, an easily quantifiable comparison from day to day (and dog to dog). Most of the trackers calculate activity using proprietary algorithms, so pick a device based on the activity that's important to you.

GPS Location

GPS location is a primary reason for getting a tracker now. Note that trackers should be used in conjunction with microchips in a pet, not as a substitute. Most vets charge less than $50 to put the rice-sized permanent chip inside a pet. 99 percent of shelters and vet clinics have scanners. It's about as foolproof a way of being reunited with a lost pet as exists.

If you're in an area with coverage (primarily 3G on the latest trackers), the tracker talks to the towers and sends info to the internet on your pet's whereabouts you can access on your phone app. It's not always instantaneous—there can be a few minutes delay while the device realizes your pet is out of the safe zone. That's enough time for a fast pet to make a getaway, but better than not knowing at all that Fido jumped the fence.

When compared with a personal tracker device like the Tile Pro Sport or Trackr Bravo, they might look like good pet options, considering their battery life, small size, and affordable price. But pet-specific devices are made specifically for collars (or come with collars) and are ruggedized. All are dirt- and water-resistant enough to handle a swim by the more daring pet escapees.

There are typically monthly or annual fees associated with GPS tracking. The lowest price we've seen is the Nuzzle, which costs $189.99 upfront but requires no monthly fees. The next cheapest option is the Paby, at $194.76 for the device itself and the first two years of service.

What About Cats?

Many of the devices available are a trifle too big to effectively work on cats, or the algorithms used just don't take the slinky movements of the feline into account the way they do a dopey, lumbering canine. If you want to track your cat, we've highlighted which devices do double-duty in the chart above.

Also consider size and weight for the different breeds of dogs. The smallest tracker we've tested is the Tractive Motion at just a quarter of an ounce; the Link AKC and PetPace are very large and work best with the collars that ship with the devices, though the collars come in various sizes.

A few of these devices try to track more than just activity and location. Temperature is one that comes up a lot, because hot cars are killers. Don't leave the dog or cat inside, even with the windows down! That said, we've found temperature to be fairly inaccurate, be it from dogs sitting close to wood-fired stoves on a cold day, laying in the sun by the bay window, or just folding the tracker up into their neck while sleeping. It might not be a bad feature to have, but the warnings take on a boy-who-cried-wolf aspect.

Perhaps the biggest issue you'll have with these devices is battery life and charging. Some have batteries that can last a week (Whistle 3, FitBark), while others last just a couple days at best (Link AKC, Paby). Not surprising, location services negatively impact battery life. If a dog is on an extended furlough without leave, talking to cell phone towers to get a GPS signal can chew through battery quickly. So find that missing pet fast.

Still, it's hard to argue with the peace of mind these trackers provide. And after all the love your pet brings into your life, isn't it the least you can do?
